About BakeLab

BakeLab is a baking science platform that helps home bakers adapt recipes with more confidence.

Most recipe tools treat baking like simple arithmetic. But baking is chemistry. Changing the serving size, replacing an ingredient, reducing sugar or using a different tin can affect moisture, structure, rise, browning, texture and bake time. BakeLab is designed to help bakers understand those consequences before they put anything in the oven.

At the centre of BakeLab is Recipe Lab, a free tool that lets users paste or enter a baking recipe, review the ingredients and method, then adapt it for their kitchen.

With BakeLab, users can:

  • Scale recipes up or down without manually recalculating every ingredient
  • Change serving quantities to suit the number of people they are baking for
  • Explore ingredient substitutions when something is missing or unsuitable
  • See practical risk warnings before making a swap
  • Understand how a change may affect texture, flavour, structure, moisture, colour or rise
  • Review any related adjustments to the method, mixing process, oven temperature or baking time
  • Keep the original recipe visible while reviewing the adapted version
  • Make better-informed decisions instead of relying on a generic one-to-one substitution

BakeLab is built around the idea that a technically possible substitution is not always an equal substitution. Replacing butter with oil, for example, may preserve fat but change aeration, flavour and batter behaviour. Replacing a dry ingredient with a liquid alternative can alter the overall hydration of the recipe. BakeLab aims to surface these trade-offs clearly, so the baker remains in control.

The platform is especially useful for:

  • Home bakers working with ingredients already in their cupboard
  • People adapting recipes for dietary needs or preferences
  • Bakers scaling recipes for different occasions
  • Beginners who want clearer guidance and fewer failed bakes
  • Experienced bakers who want a faster way to assess recipe changes
  • Anyone with a saved folder full of recipes they never made because one ingredient, serving size or calculation got in the way

BakeLab does not claim that every recipe change is risk-free. Instead, it shows where uncertainty exists and explains what the baker may need to watch. The goal is not to automate judgement away, but to make baking decisions more transparent, practical and grounded in baking science.

BakeLab is being developed as a broader digital workspace for baking. Its future direction includes ratio-led base recipes, tin-size adaptation, deeper recipe analysis, personalised baking guidance and tools that help bakers learn from each bake.

Recipe Lab is currently live and free to use at bakelab.co.uk.

BakeLab turns “I can’t make this recipe” into “Here is how I can make it work.”
